Jacob Piper-9/11

December 19, 1944
I woke up today to the rancid smell of human waste and body odor. I walk outside to see the complete dismay we have been living in. I see to look of death to come on so many peoples faces. The look in the children’s eyes is a look of despair. The sun hits me and I fell warm but still freezing. The dark black smoke billows out of the stacks they have been doing that all day. The smell outside is not that different from the smell inside. The wind only helps a small amount it just blows away the smell only to replace with a new smell sometimes worse than the last. I feel the hunger inside of me building up inside. As I look at the people around me I see their bones showing through their clothes. We all have been broken down piece by piece since we arrived here. The children suffer more than the adults because some just don’t know why people would do this to them and their families. A young boy is crying asking if anyone has seen his father who went away with the group of men yesterday towards the buildings near the smoke stacks. The boy walks off towards the fence to cry on his own with no one to comfort him. Suddenly a group of shoulders round up a group to go with them towards the stacks the boy is one of them being rounded up. They begin to walk and all I can think of is what will happen to them why do they do this every day and what goes in in those buildings. I turn and walk to a place where I can be alone and not watch people suffer and so I can rest in peace as I grow weary and tired I begin to realize that I am going to die here. We all are going to die here.
December 20, 1944
I woke up this morning to be yelled at by a soldier telling me to get up. I was my day to work. As I walked with my group over to where we will be working for the day we passed close to the building there was nothing there I glimpsed inside an open door I spied piles of clothing all the same like the ones me and everyone else in the camp are wearing except for the soldiers. I can’t help but think about the boy yesterday what happened to him? Did he finally find his father? Is he even alive right now? As we arrive at thee location we begin to dig a deep hole in the ground. None of us know why we are digging these pits all we know is that we have been digging a lot of them since we arrived here every day a different group digs While another is sent to clean the ashes out of the ovens where the stacks sprout from. We dig all day till the pit is deep enough to the soldier’s satisfactions.
December 21, 1944
We all have been in such despair that we all forgot that it was Hanukkah soon we all are sad that we can’t spend this holiday with our families. I begin to wonder where my wife and daughters are. We were all separated from each other in June I miss my family so much. My son and I were still together in august but he was sick even before this all happened and he died in my arms he looked so peaceful when he passed away. I was happy that he no longer had to suffer the way I am now. There is something going on around the camp all the soldiers are becoming impatient with us. We hope and pray that there is someone coming to rescue us from this hell we are in. some of the soldiers have left. And at morning the few remaining had the entire camp digging holes larger than the ones we were digging for the past few months. The smell from the stacks is getting worse. The smoke not stopped and even more men and children form the camps have left with the soldiers I fear that all of our lives are in danger

Anglo-Saxon Riddle

I have leaves but am not a tree.
My vocabulary is expansive
and I come in many shapes and sizes.
I can take you all around the globe
and am multi-lingual.
I am as ancient as Egypt
and as young as yesterday.
What am I?
The food can be gross
The cafeteria always smells like artichokes
There are kids running wild and free
The teachers they fuss
Just because we like a rush
And it gets us a detention or three
Both my parents work here
I do something wrong and they appear
So I just have to be good
There is homework that’s a mess
The four sports plus school are a stress
And I want to just be done
But on top of all of this I have a 4.0 to keep up with
And there are people that don’t do anything
Sometimes I wish I could just be like that
So I wasn’t stressed all the time
The teachers know us too well
There are only 14 kids per class
And you get in trouble for having fun
We have to take classes online
It’s a joke in my mind
We should just get teachers for us

(To the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)

______had a lot of homework,
A lot of homework, a lot of homework
_______ had a lot of homework and it piled up.

Every time she went to class
Went to class, went to class,
Every time she went to class,
She just got more and more.

She is getting very stressed
Very stressed, very stressed
She is getting very stressed
And it’s making her a mess.

After school she goes to sports,
Goes to sports, goes to sports,
After school she goes to sports
And stays real late.

When she finally gets home gets home, gets home
when she finally gets home
it’s time to get down to work.

The hours drag on and on
On and on, on and on
The hours drag on and on
But she gets it done.

Then it’s back to school back to school back to school
then it’s back to school
where it happens all again.

Thank goodness, she has only one more year
One more year, one more year,
Thank goodness, she only has one more year
Then it will be all done!

The Joys of the Morning

Give me a break
This is too much to take,
It’s six a.m. already?
If the alarm doesn’t stop beeping,
I’m going to start freaking,
The morning is not going steady.
It’s the devil in disguise,
Waiting for the sun to rise,
Because the morning is just so vain.
Heavy eyelids
And unhappy kids,
The morning brings so much pain.
Breakfast fell on the floor
And now there’s no more,
Mornings are just no fun.
It’s still dark outside
Under the covers I hide
To shelter from the peeping sun.
The snooze button fails
So the morning prevails,
But now being on time is not "makeable."
So we "suck it up" and do it
Because there’s nothing else to it,
Mornings are just inescapable.

9-11 diary entry

September 9 2001
Today I decided to start keeping track of every event that happens to me in a journal. Today naturally I woke up this morning feeling very tired; you see I was at the office until eleven o’ clock. I am very busy all hours of the day, I barley have time for my kids and its starting to affect our relationship. I left for work today at seven forty-five, and arrived at the first world trade center tower at eight thirty. Today I had to create a spreadsheet for my own budget here at the company. It was an extraordinarily difficult task, if I didn’t complete by the time I left I would have fallen behind majorly.
September 10 2001
Today I woke up with a sort of headache, my head was throbbing and I just wanted to stay home but yet again I would have fallen very far behind. My wife and children are starting to become very distant to me and I am beginning to feel slightly depressed, I’ve been spending way to long at work and they are becoming anxious and agitated. I really didn’t have to do much today at the office, except be my bosses little errand runner. He assigns me so many nitpicky tasks and I feel that if I don’t stand up to him soon I could end up losing my family. At least tonight I got home by nine o’ clock instead of eleven o’ clock.
September 11 2001
Today I was late for work by about ten minutes, because some careless driver decided to run into the rear end of the car in front of me. Its times like these that if more people paid attention on the road traffic wouldn’t get clogged up. I really am starting to not enjoy my time at the office; the days are getting longer and longer. Today was the day my life changed, I was 10 floors below the floor that got hit by an airplane, I was lucky to be alive they made us come down the stairs and evacuate the building, while doing so I realized that I wasn’t the only one unhappy. There were many people that had more severe cases of sadness than I do. There was one man whose wife was above the crash site meaning she was trapped, and there was nothing anyone could do to help her. The only thing that man could do is to pray to the gods that some miracle will happen to those unlucky souls.
September 12 2001
Yesterday I made it safely out of the building and I got home to my wife and kids they were so blessed to see me alive. We all could not contain the tears from this national tragedy and the great happiness that I was alive; I have to go to the hospital today for a checkup, to see if I’m injured. Luckily I am not injured. I won’t be going back to work for a very long time.

December 5 1941
I do not know why I am writing this but I felt like it would you all should know about my adventures on the USS Nevada. My first day on the ship was December 5 1941. When I got on the ship, I was lost because i have never been on a boat that was that big before in my life. However, my lieutenant showed me around the ship and I was still lost.
December 6 1941
It is my second day on the ship. And after spending my first night aboard the ship I was hungry so I went to the mess hall and got in line. The next thing I knew I was getting pushed to the back of the line by this brute of a man. The man said listen newbie you get your food after every one else has eaten. So when I actually got my food it was all hard and cold. However, I ate it anyways because I had a long day of work ahead of me.
December 7 1941
It is my third day and I had been up all night because I was think about that brute at breakfast. And 730 came along and I went up to the deck of the ship to look at the view and was getting hungry because I could smell the food cooking. But I sat there for 15 minutes and I sow planes coming in low and fast. At first I thought it was the navy practicing the flight maneuvers. But then I saw a bomb drop and then I realized that we were being bombed. So I mounted the gun on the side of the ship to try to fight off the planes that were trying to destroy my home.
December 8 1941
All the men in my ship had to go stand guard around the island because the ship was in dry docks getting repaired after the fight yesterday. But I am pretty sure that I was not the only one that was scared that the Japanese were going to come back again. While standing guard I looked around to see who I knew and the person that I sow to the left of me was that brute and he was crying about something and the man to the right was the lieutenant.

                December 6, 1941 Honolulu, Hawaii

Today I lay in slumber watching the rising sun as it sets just above the ocean. The view of it is magnificent, but as I look to my left the massive fleets of naval battle ships surrounding me. The ship that I call my home is the USS Arizona not quite your five star hotel but she’s home. I better hurry to my post before captain sees me loafing about.

December 7, 1941

The words to describe what has happened today I cannot attain.  We were attacked by hundreds of Japanese fighter planes it’s like they just came out of nowhere. I barely made it out alive my ship was sunk and I was thrown overboard.  I attempted to swim to shore but was shot by a plane that was flying overhead. But somehow I woke up on the beach not knowing how I got there.

December 8, 1941

These are slower starting to calm down I’ve been in the hospital overnight. There’s some many people injured. The doctor said I got hit in the spine and may never walk again but it didn’t seem to matter as I stared blankly at all the other men and women being carried away marked with death.

December 9, 1941

The Doctor says I will be released soon for there is nothing further that they can do for me.  This bothers me but I will still be able to go home and see my family my service to the military is over. When I look back I will know how fortunate I was to survive! I may be cripple from the waist down but I escaped death on this horribly but beautiful island.

Christopher Columbus

August 3, 1492

we left spain today heading for the new world. We have three ships and plent of food to last us for months and there. The men are wodnering if we are going to make it or not the caption is acting really strang. The men just got the ship set sail in the right direction so were all going to bed now.

August 12, 1492

we are going threw a storm today it has the ships almost tipping over. One of the ships almost crashed and tipped over. A man went over the edge off one of the boat already and was lost him at sea. the caption has told us all to go under deck to stay safe for the night.

October 1, 1492

We are getting close to land i can feel it. The men are all getting excited to step off the ship. soon we will all be standing on land agian but this time we will be standing on a new land. They just made dinner for one of the last times this way.

October 12, 1492

We hit land today and the men all jumped out of the ship and started rolling around in the dirt. They looked around for a bit till one man came back and said there was life on this rock. The men all went and looked at what he was talking about and they saw indians and they were sitting around a fire. The men decided to sneak up on them. Before they could get all the way there the men ran away so we are heading back to spain to tell everyone.

Nature of war

October 7, 2002

My therapist told me I should carry a journal around. Why, these blank pages will not give advice, or calm me down this is pointless. I am supposed to write whatever comes to mind. There is only one thing on my mind. That would be Iraq it is my third tour and I am not even sure if I am serving my country any more. The things I have seen will never leave my memory.

October 19, 2002

I do not know if I am meant to write in this thing daily, it has been over a week sense I first wrote in it. This week I saw my squad hit with an IED all I can say is why? Why me there was good men in there and I’m the one that lived? IT IS NOT FAIR, IT IS JUST NOT! I ask god why I’m the one that lived, there was no response….

November 22, 2002

It has been a month sense my last journal entire. Recovery was hard; I looked back at my first entire. I said I was not sure if I was serving my country anymore and, the answer is I am not. I am serving the men and women who have died for their country making sure their name does not die in vain. That is my purpose and I will not fail.

February 12, 2003

Each day is getting easier to live with knowing my squad’s death will always be with me. I am back in Iraq, now I have squad that I am responsible of. None of them is experienced they are all scared to be over here. I know what it; I still remember my first time over here. There is one soldier though by the name of Henry Adams he is private; he has potential an amazing solider. I hope this kid goes far

June 6th 1990 Tornado in Limon

May 26th 1990
Today is the day… this absolutely beautiful day in Limon, Colorado is the day that marks the end of one, but the beginning of another.  Today is the day that I graduate from high school!!!  I can’t express in words how extremely excited I am to be out of silly high school and start college at NJC in the fall of 1990.  My plans are to become a registered nurse, and the absolute best one at that!  Well, it is 6:30 a.m. I have to be at the school at 9:30 a.m. and you know how girls are when they get ready for important events so I better stop writing and go get ready to get my diploma that I have worked oh so hard for!

June 2nd 1990
Hey there!  Sorry it has been awhile, graduation time is a busy time!  On the plus side it was perfect!  I wouldn’t have had it any other way.  Anyhow, this whole week the weather has been so beautiful, I’ve been out tanning, walking, driving around with friends, going to the park to play a little volleyball.  I’ve been doing all kinds of fun things you can do when you don’t have to spend your whole day in a classroom doing homework.  Today is the first day since graduation that it has rained!  I personally do not like the rain very much.  It’s just not as much fun to enjoy yourself outside when you are soaked from the rain with all your heavy wet clothes.  Oh well, looks like today will be mostly spent inside with my wonderful family.

June 4th 1990
Yet again we have us another rainy day!  Today it seems to be much worse than the past few days.  I have been listening to the news lately, there are so many tornados coming out of this storm!  I sure hope there is not going to be one here.  There has never, for all my 18 years of living, been a tornado here.  Well, there have been some outside of Limon, but none that have ever affected anyone or damaged anything.  I say the likelihood of us getting hit by a tornado is pretty slim… close to zero! Ah, I suppose there is no need to worry… I hope. See ya until next time!

June 6th 1990
Slim… close to zero?  I could never be more wrong.  As I sat in the basement hearing those sirens I couldn’t help but think of what life is going to be like once this tornado takes everything I have… my house, my family, my friends, my town, my world as I know it.  I hear this F3 tornado ripping through town… tearing everything to nothing, changing a town full of happiness and energy into… a life sucking black hole.  As I hear the shreds of metal, the shingles of my neighbor’s home, the branches from the tree’s from my very own front yard pounding into my house above me, I think to myself, how am I going to survive without my house, my family, my friends, my town… my world?  How am I going to function?  Do we have to just start over completely?.... The metal, the shingles, and the branches come to rest, the wind stops completely… we sit there numb to any emotions.  At that moment I experienced the loudest silence.

chicago union stockyard fire

Chicago Union Stockyard fire of 1910
The fire started in warehouse 7 on December 22 4:09 am at the Nelson Morris Company on the 4300 block of South Loomis Street. Just a half an hour later there was at least thirty or more fire trucks there fighting the enormous blaze. We are told that an ammonia pipe exploded causing the fire and collapse of the building.
The blaze still engulfs the whole building the stockyard workers and the now forty fire trucks are working as fast as they can to get the fire controlled. This is turning into a hard task because the gases are still leaking into the building feeding the fire. They are trying to find the emergency shut off valves but are suspected to be under part of the fallen building.
Finally at 6:37 am on December 23 the fire was finally extinguished with the help of fifty plus fire trucks and seven hook and ladder trucks. The valves were never found but they decided to shut the gas off to the whole city. Which in turn quit feeding the fire and they were able to put out the fire.
The estimated total damage is expected to be over 2 million dollars. There 27 expected deaths due to the fire being caused by explosions and the crumbling of the building.

Austin

Early 1861,
For a great while now the states have been dividing over slavery. They have been choosing sides and wanting to keep slavery or get rid of it. Today President Lincoln asked me to command the union army. Although I wanted to accept his offer I didn’t. I declined it because my home is in Virginia.
April 1861,
Today Virginia officially declared its succession from the Union. I followed my home state because I thought it was my job to support my state. I became a senior military advisor to President Jefferson Davis for the Confederacy Army. I am one of the best military commanders known. I am known for my tactics that I display in war.
1862-1863
We have been battling the Union army off and on for two years now. We had The Battle of Fredericksburg which we had won by being entrenched and standing our ground against the Union assaults. We also had The Battle of Chancellorsville where we were out numbered 2 to 1. I divided my army up to attack which lead to another confederate victory.
1863-1865
The Battle of the Wilderness there was no actual victory for either side. Both armies suffered heavy casualties. The Battle of Cold Harbor was a victory that came with ease. We were fortified up and the Union army kept coming at us with a frontal attack, which kept failing. The Seven Days Battles were a series of battles over o span of seven days which we had lost 20,000 soldiers. We ended our resistance when I surrendered to Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.

9/11

It’s September tenth and about five in the afternoon here in New York. I’m just at my house enjoying my day off by relaxing and watching some college football on T.V. I wake up the next morning to go to work; my job isn’t your everyday fast food place. I work in the World Trade Center, and I love every bit of it. Well anyways I wake up and get ready for work and when I was on my way I had this feeling in my stomach that something just wasn’t right.
I get to work and as I’m walking through the office on the 34th floor I hear over the intercom that some airplanes were flying very fast towards the towers and everybody around me hopped up and ran to the windows to look. Sure as heck there was a huge airplane barreling straight towards the tower. Everyone started pacing and panicking running for the elevators and stairs but right as we all got to the stairwell the plane hit in a trembling explosion. I remember seeing people jumping through windows to try to get away from the flames and falling metal. I was in the stairwell running and running at as fast as pace as my body would let me go.
I was one of the very few people that made it to the bottom. I ran out the front door of the twin towers in shock and covered in debris. I hoped that all my friends made it out too but there was literally no way to tell until probably the next day. I was surrounded by police and firemen right as I ran out the door, I was also asked if I needed to be hauled to the hospital by ambulance and if I were hurt. I Answered back and said no sir I’m fine but then I looked down and noticed about three lacerations on my right leg. They were probably at least all an inch deep and about four inches long.
I quickly answered again and said yes take me in. I remember being in the Ambulance and still being able to hear the Towers falling and people screaming. The City of new York looked like it had just been through a world war again.

Hurrican Katrina

Tuesday August 23, 2005

Its 5:00 p.m. and I’m watching the news in my New Orleans home, the news has a weather interruption about the formation of a hurricane. My first thought is to panic and call everyone I know and try to keep them safe. They are naming the hurricane Katrina, saying it could be a very deadly one to the area around the Gulf of Mexico. I decided I would just tell my mom when she got home. She tells me don’t worry it will miss us completely but I don’t got a good feeling about this. I guess we will just wait and see...

Thursday August 25, 2005
Couple days go by and it’s still building and getting stronger. I’m watching the news again tonight. Hurricane Katrina is striking down on the southern tip of Florida. At this point I’m freaking out just a little bit because it could very well come this way. I don’t want to lose everything I have or possibly lose a friend or family to the massive hurricane.

Saturday August 27, 2005
Hurricane Katrina is reaching a category 3 on the intensity scale. By this time officials were demanding a voluntary evacuation for all the residents in Louisiana. At this time I begin to freak out and am running around the house grabbing up all my personal belongs that I can fit in a pack back. Nobody knows when or even if it will strike down again but I got a bad feeling about this and want to get out of harms way soon.

Sunday August 29, 2005
This could very well be the last time I write in my journal. Hurricane Katrina reached a category 4 on the intensity scale at 12:40 a.m. I cannot sleep at all, way to nervous of what could happen. Its morning now about 7:00 a.m. and I’m scared at what could happen to me will I live another day or day today. It’s an uncomfortable feeling but what else is there to do. I got my personal belongings and I think I am far enough away that I should not be affected by this now category 5 hurricane, I guess only time will tell…

Trojan War Diary

Today I was at a marriage ceremony between gods in Troy and they forgot to invite one god who became very angry. She came in the door with a golden apple and said that this apple was for the fairest lady in the building which Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite all three went for the apple which was strange because I believed that Hera was the fairest. But Paris got to choose because he was the “most beautiful man” of this time and for some reason he chose Aphrodite. Aphrodite promised him the fairest lady in the land which was Helen of Greece so he left to steal her away. I knew this was a big mistake for him because my country would take Troy over for this.
Odysseus

Today I was back in Greece and found out that we were going to set sail for Troy to get Helen back because Paris succeeded in taking Helen. I tried to get out of this war by acting insane but that dang Palamedes caught me on faking it so I had to go. Cinyras was supposed to make all 50 ships for us to take to Troy and he made one, with the other 49 being toy ships. I personally thought this was kind of funny because he was making a joke and I really didn’t want to go to war. Then thankfully a few people made Diana mad and she calmed the seas so we couldn’t leave to Troy. The only way that we could set sail for Troy was if Agamemnon was sacrificed, so they did that and we then set sail.
Odysseus

Over this next span of time I am going to talk about we set sail and landed by Telephus to get Helen back. The people here said that they did not take Helen but for some reason we took their city over anyway. After this we returned home and the king of Telephus had been wounded by Achilles. The only way he could be cured was if Achilles cured it and so in return for curing the king he told us where Helen was which was Troy. Once we got to Troy I had to go talk to the people of Troy to ask them for Helen and the treasures back. The people refused so we waged war on them.
Odysseus

The next nine years were the consistency of the Trojan War. We realized that Troy was getting supplies from their neighbors and so we took them over and stole their goods so Troy was shut off from all supplies. One of the most important parts to our army in Achilles was killed by Paris himself which really angered me. After this we got Achilles’ son to fight in the war and I led some men into Troy to take the Palladium. The next part is the best yet, we got the bright idea to make a Trojan horse and say it was a gift for giving up in the war and we were leaving their land, but really it was a way for us to get all of our soldiers into Troy to take their city over and get Helen and the treasure back. This succeeded and we were able to return to Troy with Helen and all the treasure but a loss of many good men including Achilles. Odysseus

Great Chicago Fire

October 8, 1871
Today a horrible event occurred. There was a great fire that started in the barn of one of the residents of Chicago that hit the hay and took off running. Luckily the fire did not burn my house but for a lot of the people in Chicago they aren’t so lucky. It lit up the night time sky like a candle and from what I can see 10 houses have been burned down but I am going to bed and see what has all happened in the morning.

Today I woke up to a smoke smell that has filled the air of Chicago. I went outside and noticed that with all the smoke in the air it has blocked the sun and there is hardly any sunlight that can be used. You see people walk around outside with pieces of clothing over their faces and hope that the piece of cloth acts as a filter as they breath. The day goes on and the smoke gets thicker and I wonder how in the world we are going to put the fire out. As I get set to go to bed I notice that the sky night is not as bright as the night before so I start to think that the fire is starting to go down.

Today the fire has finally went out and people are trying to figure out how much damage has been done. As I stroll down the streets I see people crying in front of burnt down houses and barns. I have also noticed that there are people dragging out dead bodies out of homes of where old people had lived. It has been said that more than 50 people gave gone missing since the fire has started. There are people trying to figure out how many people have been killed, how many houses have been burned down, and the amount of damage that has all occurred.

Today the people are trying to figure out what started the fire. They have decided where the fire had started but can’t answer the question how it got started. People believe that there was a lantern in the barn and that a cow had knocked it over. Then with all the straw on the ground the fire took off and burned the barn down. Then the fire went from the too a near by house then the down caught on fire. That is how people believe that the Chicago fire happened.
